Long Island will soon be home to a Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team.
State congressional lawmakers secured $5 million to form the unit, which will be based in Farmingdale. State Senator Michael Balboni (R-East Williston) says the 22-member force will coordinate operations for local hazardous material crews, fire and police teams. The unit will be made up of New York National Guard members.
U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) says while a group is already operating upstate, it will be beneficial to have a team closer to Manhattan. King expects the terror response unit to be up and running next year.
