A young man accused of killing a Holbrook teen during a high-speed chase accepted a plea bargain Thursday.
Russell Cronin, 18, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Thomas Herzberg. Cronin fired a gun as he, 18-year-old Brian Rivera and 19-year-old Michael Weed, chased Herzberg and his passenger down Patchogue-Holbrook Road during a robbery attempt last fall. Cronin fired the first shot, but it was not the bullet that killed Herzberg.
As part of the deal, Cronin will serve 18 years to life in prison. He will be sentenced in August. Cronin and Weed, who also struck a plea bargain, are required to testify against Rivera, whose murder case recently began pre-trial proceedings.
