Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz's recent comments about "New York values" have not earned him many friends in the Empire State.

"I think I think most people know exactly what New York values are," Cruz stated in Thursday night GOP debate. "Everyone understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal or pro-abortion or pro-gay-marriage, focused around money and the media."

GOP front-runner Donald Trump, a native New Yorker, fired back, calling Cruz's comments "insulting."

New York newspapers and lawmakers on both side of the aisle are saying that his comment were a cheap shot.

"To question our values, what's he talking about? The values of the cops and firefighters?" asked Rep. Peter King (R - Seaford) "We personify the United States. And for him coming from Texas, where does he get off criticizing our values?"

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Cruz is "practicing the politics of division."

Many editorials in response to Cruz's remarks called him a hypocrite, referring to Cruz's previously undisclosed $1 million in loans from Goldman Sachs and Citibank, two big New York banks.
