The Tanglaw Filipino-American Society of Long Island held an emergency meeting in East Patchogue Sunday to discuss efforts to help the Philippines following a devastating typhoon.

The organization's president, Robert Zarate, says its efforts have already begun to help the victims in the Philippines. The group is gathering boxes of canned food, medicine and clothes to be sent to charities there.

The Tanglaw Filipino-American Society of Long Island will also be working to raise funds for the victims. The organization will hold its annual ball in Holbrook on Nov. 23. It's open to the public, and funds raised will be used to provide aid to survivors.

Officials fear at least 12,000 people were killed in Friday's typhoon.
