Joshua Alvarado is now facing manslaughter charges after prosecutors say he was high on drugs when he struck and killed John Hiro last month.
"Alvarado hit the gas and drove diagonally through the intersection bearing left onto Merrick Avenue. He mounted the curb and struck 70-year-old John Miro who was standing on the sidewalk," said Nassau District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
Alvarado pleaded not guilty to the charges.
He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
