The new school year continues to be plagued with new challenges, and students in a Syosset middle school are already home and learning remotely after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19.
Officials at South Woods Middle School say they are hoping the school will be closed just for today.
However, it depends on whether or not the Nassau County Department of Health can complete its contact tracing investigation.
Until then, all students are asked to consider themselves under precautionary quarantine.
The district said it was a member of their instructional staff that tested positive.
Students were coming to school five days a week, but they had their virtual plan on standby so the switch was easier if necessary.
One Long Island parent News 12 spoke to said she was glad she made the decision to start out the year homeschooling.
"We don't know what's going to happen. You know, I'd love to for the kids to go back to school, for teachers to teach how they used to and be safe," says Monina Malloy.
Officials say the building has had a deep cleaning.
Meanwhile, the district said parents will get an update this afternoon and anyone considered to have been in close contact with the individual will be notified directly and asked to quarantine for 14 days.
