A swastika was found carved onto an Oceanside sidewalk Monday afternoon.
Police were called to the scene on Oceanside Road and Carlton Court after a passerby noticed the hateful symbol and contacted state Sen. Todd Kaminsky's office. Police say it's being investigated as a "bias incident."
In Nassau County, police say anti-Semitic incidents have decreased since last year -- with 22 so far in 2018, compared to 39 throughout 2017.
The defaced sidewalk is in front of a warehouse owned by South Nassau Communities Hospital. A spokesman says they will use a grinder to permanently erase the symbol.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran denounced the vandalism, saying it would be gone by the end of the day.
Police say they were unable to find nearby surveillance video of the incident. They ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
