A kitten rescued from a storm drain in Deer Park is getting a fresh start thanks to the efforts of Suffolk police, animal rescuers and a few chicken nuggets.
North Fork Country Kids Animal Rescue was called in to assist police in getting the trapped kitten out of a storm drain.
The nonprofit's founder, Virginia Scudder, arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m. and worked for over 5 hours to bring the feisty feline safely to the surface.
Scudder thanked Suffolk police for helping pull the drainage grating so the rescue could set a kitten trap.
Video from the rescue shows Scudder reaching into the drain and finally pulling the kitten up to safety inside the carrier.
The kitten is now on the way to a veterinarian for a full checkup before becoming available for adoption.
As for how rescuers got the kitten close enough to catch, the answer was simple: chicken nuggets.
