A Mt. Sinai High School teacher already surrounded by controversy faces more trouble after he allegedly drove drunk and hit a car.
John Bortnowsky is accused of driving drunk and clipping the car of off-duty Suffolk police officer Heather Geer Wednesday night.
Geer said she saw Bortnowsky's car coming right for her: "the headlights come through the intersection and then turn in my direction, so I veered off to the right." Geer said she then followed the car for about half a mile before Bortnowsky stopped and she approached him on foot.
Police said Bortnowsky, a 55-year-old who taught chemistry in the district for nearly 30 years, had a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit.
In March, Bortnowsky was suspended with pay after a female student filed a sexual harassment complaint against him. Criminal charges have not yet been brought against Bortnowsky in that case, but he was charged with driving while intoxicated in Wednesday's incident.
