Nassau police say an investigation is underway after a swastika was found at Wantagh High School.
In a letter to the community, Wantagh Union Free School District Superintendent John McNamara said a janitor found it drawn on the side of a locker in the boys locker room Monday after school.
"This behavior does not reflect the strong values of our community, and we will not tolerate acts of hate in any form. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken," he says.
Rabbi Daniel Bar-Nahum, of Temple B'Nai Torah in Wantagh, says, unfortunately, he is not surprised to hear of an incident like this.
"The intention is less important than the impact and the impact of that symbol is to spread hate and to say to my community that we're not welcome,” he said.
He says better education about the impact the symbol has could be beneficial and a way of making sure this symbol never surfaces again.
"The importance of history, understanding what that symbol means, understanding where that symbol comes from, understanding what that symbol represents," he said.
