Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi is proposing a tax exemption for veterans who did not see combat, but who fought in America?s longest protracted war ? the Cold War.
Cold War veterans often don?t get the same recognition as other vets, so Suozzi wants to give them a break on their property tax bills.
?It's not going to be a big dollar amount,? Suozzi says. ?It?s not going to make or break the bank, but [it] is another way of honoring our veterans.?
Nassau County Tax Assessor Harvey Levinson says the break could amount to about 10 to 15 percent. However, he says this means others would have to pay more to make up for the tax break vets would be getting.
Suffolk County has already approved a tax break for Cold War veterans, which will go into effect for the 2009-2010 tax year. If the Nassau County measure is passed, it will be implemented in the same time frame.
