Suffolk County sprayed areas of Islip and the Town of Babylon for mosquitoes tonight, just days after the county's first human case of the West Nile virus this season was confirmed in the area. County officials said that parts of Babylon, North Babylon, West Islip and West Bay Shore were aerially targeted with pesticides. Authorities said the resident who contracted West Nile lived in the Town of Babylon, and 16 samples from the area have tested positive for the virus. The spray that was used to kill the pests contains the same ingredients found in tick and flea prevention for pets. Health officials said the risks from spraying are much less than the risks associated with mosquito-borne illness. Still, some residents who spoke with News 12 Long Island said they're concerned about the pesticides. Several residents said they hadn't received any warning from the county about it. The county says it used the Code Red phone system to notify residents, but that's only for people who had signed up for the service.
