Wednesday marked the start of Suffolk County's inaugural girls flag football league.
Sachem North took on Sachem East in the first game of the season in Farmingville.
It was the first of seven games that will take place this year on Long Island.
Nassau County started its schedule several weeks ago and the female athletes say they are happy to make history by taking the gridiron.
"We're very excited," says Sachem East senior Anna Morrongiello. "I feel like it's a very good opportunity for a lot of girls that wanted to try football, but with the boys teams and everything. But I think it's a very good opportunity for everyone here and it's going to be fun. It's going to be a lot of fun."
The Suffolk season ends on May 21 with the top four teams making the playoffs for a chance at a county championship.
The winner will face the Nassau champions in the first Long Island championship.
