More than 30 dogs were rescued from a home in Bohemia Friday.
Suffolk SPCA officials say they were called to a Blake Avenue home, where they discovered 34 dogs living in deplorable conditions. They say several rats were seen in the house as well.
"Many of the dogs were found covered in feces, overgrown nails, the floors were covered in feces, the smell was overwhelming," says Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross.
Neighbors say they've been trying to help the dogs in the house for years. One person says the sound of barking and fighting lowered the quality of life in the neighborhood.
All of the dogs were taken to Islip Animal Shelter for evaluation and will eventually be put up for adoption.
Phillis and Louis Van Dyken have been charged with animal cruelty in relation to the findings, SPCA officials say. The couple is facing up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The fire marshal has since condemned the house, deeming it uninhabitable.
