Suffolk residents are fuming after the county Legislature rejected a bill to cut a portion of the county sales tax on gasoline.
Legislator Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches) says the bill would have saved drivers about a nickel per gallon. He says the government takes enough money out of people?s pockets and it?s time to give back some of the county?s windfall $158.5 million budget surplus to consumers.
Democrats in the Legislature argue the gas tax cap would blow a $24 million hole in the budget. They say tax revenues have dropped off since people have less disposable income.
