As Long Island comes out of what's known as the 100 deadliest days of summer, Suffolk County police are reporting that the number of fatal crashes is on the rise, compared to prior years.
The 100 deadliest days of summer is the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
According to new data released by Suffolk police, 37 people died in crashes from May 29 to Aug. 31. Among the 37 fatalities, 10 of them were pedestrians.
This prompted police to not only focus on driver enforcement, but to also hone in on the people sharing the road with drivers.
"It's working on the drivers, its working on the pedestrians, and a host of other things like traffic engineering, just to make sure we keep people safe," says Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison.
Suffolk police handed out reflective stickers for bicycles and neon vests to anyone who wanted one on Tuesday. Those who took them say it's a great idea.
Cyclists who would like a reflective vest can pick one up at police headquarters in Yaphank.
