Christopher Zonin, 27, was honored for his heroism on Thursday for his act of heroism in a 2019 fire at a Centereach home. 

Zonin is a Suffolk police officer but also works as a Huntington Manor volunteer firefighter. He is the first member of the Suffolk Police Department to receive the Lifesaving Award.

In 2019, Zonin went into a burning home and alerted four residents to get out. Three were able to escape on their own. He dragged an unconscious man to safety through a kitchen nearly engulfed in flames.

Gov. Kathy Hochul made the announcement on the first day of National Police Week.

Acting Suffolk Police Commissioner Stuart Cameron said, “The people of Suffolk County are fortunate to be protected by police officers like Christopher Zonin, who was willing to put his own life on the line to save others from a house fire in 2019. Officer Zonin represents the very best of law enforcement.”
