Suffolk police and Long Island Muslims engaged one another at a Bay Shore mosque Saturday night for a discussion about bias crimes and how to build bridges.
Suffolk County Deputy Police Commissioner Risco Mention-Lewis explained how to report a bias incident, and the difference between a rude action and a criminal one.
"The most important thing for people to understand is what is bias, what does it look like, how do I report it, and what can I expect from the police department," says Mention-Lewis.
Organizers say there has been an increase in bias incidents against Muslims in Suffolk since the presidential election, but police say their numbers do not reflect that.
The event was held at the Muslim Center of Long Island.
