Suffolk County legislators are expected to pass legislation next week that will add a 5-cent charge for every plastic and paper bag a consumer needs to pack up their purchases.
The law would affect any shop that gives out bags, not just grocery stores.
Long Island environmentalists originally wanted plastic bags banned but say the legislation is a good compromise.
The bill will be put up for a vote by the full Legislature next Wednesday.
