Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone has declared a state of emergency in the county due to the winter storm.
The executive is urging residents to stay off the roads due to dangerous whiteout conditions, high winds and a significant amount of snowfall already on the roads.
Bellone said they'd received about 60 storm-related calls, including seven for car accidents, by 8 a.m.
A blizzard warning is in effect for both Nassau and Suffolk counties through Sunday.
Coastal flooding is also a major concern as the storm comes during a full moon. Low-lying areas can expect flooding, especially during times of high tide.
The executive says the county is closely monitoring the flooding situation.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has also declared a state of emegency for parts of New York state, including Long Island.
