Suffolk County has released a memo of coronavirus safety guidance for schools, after the state Department of Health said it wouldn’t.
It comes less than a month before school begins. The memo from the county contains recommendations only, and they're the same as current CDC guidelines:
  • Universal mask wearing is AGAIN recommended for all students, staff and visitors in school and on buses regardless of vaccination status
  • Schools should maintain a minimum of 3 feet between students in classrooms, during physical education and music - Any vaccination requirements for staff would be decided by individual districts
  • Periodic COVID-19 testing is not required at this time but that could be re-evaluated
  • Students within 3 feet of an infected student DO NOT have to quarantine if both students were consistently and correctly wearing masks
Although the state Department of Health isn't issuing any guidelines, the state Department of Education still may decide to do so. In the meantime, many districts are collaborating.
“No district is an island so people are aware that the decisions they make impact folks in the neighboring community because there are no clear defining boundaries other than on a map between school districts,” says ______.
