Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy (D) and the Legislature were wheeling and dealing to settle budget disputes late into Tuesday evening.
Levy expressed his displeasure by vetoing several measures packed in the 2007 budget proposal. He says the county has to set priorities, which means some programs just won't fit. Short breaks turned into long ones as legislators fought, then compromised, behind closed doors on most of the 32 issues needing supermajorities to override Levy's veto.
Republican legislators believe Levy targeted programs specific to their districts when using his veto. The executive denies the claim.
