Some Long Island residents could remain without power through the weekend, according to PSEG Long Island, as crews continue work on restoring service in the wake of Isaias.
The tropical storm left 420,000 customers without power at its peak, according to PSEG.
It says that around 88,000 customers were still without electricity as of 1:15 p.m. Saturday.
In a statement, the utility said, "As PSEG Long Island continues to work around the clock to repair the extensive damage from Tropical Storm Isaias, it expects nearly all customers to be restored by end of day Sunday, with the possibility that a handful of the most extensive jobs may be restored early Monday. While we expect the vast majority of customers to be restored by end of day Saturday, we are finding that each job is requiring more work than anticipated due to the extent of the storm’s damage."
PSEG Long Island has been heavily criticized for its response to the storm and for a communication breakdown that has left residents frustrated and wondering when they will get their power back.
The company's phone and text services have been unable to handle the number of calls, and customers say the website's outage map has been filled with inaccuracies. Customers also tell News 12 their estimated restoration times have been fluctuating wildly and some people were even given dates that don't exist like Aug. 0.
PSEG LI claims the communication problems have not hurt its restoration efforts.
The utility says it has more than 3,500 people working 16-hour shifts to get the power back on.
