Nassau residents will have some extra time to pay their property tax bill.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order pushing back the May 11 property tax deadline to June 1.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran requested the extension to provide financial relief for taxpayers impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

"I really think our taxpayers needed some breathing room," says Curran. "You know, we're waiting for the federal government to come through with help for local businesses, payroll protection, in the meantime."

On Monday, the Republican-controlled Legislature voted to extend the deadline to June 11, but Curran says the Legislature did not have the authority to change the date -- only the governor does.

Over in Suffolk, officials have said they cannot afford to push back property tax payments because if its revenues were delayed, the county would not be able to pay back millions in bond payments due this summer.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says he has written to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin for help on the federal level.
