The Town of Brookhaven approved a plan Thursday to spend additional funds on its landfill.
The town finalized plans to spend another $1.4 million to build a new section at the landfill.
Brookhaven officials say they needed it because their $25 million construction budget isn't enough to complete the expansion.
In March, the state said the town violated odor control rules and many neighbors not only oppose the extra spending, they want the landfill closed.
The plans include adding a new cell to the facility and installing an odor control system.
The landfill is expected to be closed in six years.
