Suspected Bloods member charged with attempted murder in IHOP shooting
A suspected Bloods gang member was indicted Thursday on attempted murder and other charges in connection with the March 4 lunchtime shooting at a Lake Ronkonkoma IHOP restaurant.
Prosecutors say 19-year-old Deontrae Green, of Islandia, is the gunman seen in surveillance footage opening fire inside the IHOP.
Green was arraigned Thursday on an indictment that includes attempted murder, assault and firearm charges. Prosecutors say Green is a member of the Bloods gang and fired five shots inside the IHOP with more than 20 other patrons nearby. One bullet struck 20-year-old Tyriek Corbin, sending him stumbling back and falling into a baby sitting in a high chair.
After the shooting, prosecutors say Green ran away from the IHOP and tossed the gun. They say the weapon was later found in a wooded lot.
Green's attorney told the judge Thursday that Corbin had hit his client in the head with a bottle the night before the shooting and that if Green fired the shots he was acting in self-defense.
Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini says there's no evidence of self-defense.
"In fact, according to the defendant's own admission, that's not what happened," Sini says.
At the time of the shooting, police said Corbin was also a member of the Bloods.
Green was held on $1.5 million bond.
