The Huntington School Board met Monday night to discuss a student who was deported after accusations he was affiliated with the MS-13 gang.

The school board and Huntington High School administration have come under fire after student Alex Martinez was suspended from school. He was eventually arrested and detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents after he was questioned by security guards about alleged gang-related actions.

Martinez was the focus of a recent New York Times article. According to the report, school security guards told Martinez his blue shoes were the color of MS-13 and that he doodled a drawing of a devil with horns, a gang symbol.

Although Martinez reportedly denied gang affiliation, the Times says the security officers passed the information to ICE, which eventually led to his deportation.

School board members say the article mischaracterized the administration, but they pledged to investigate the matter.

The board members say they will be reviewing the school police resource program and see if the district needs to create a new policy to prevent a similar situation from happening.
