Civic groups are taking action after a measure to expand Brookhaven's landfill was approved. Brookhaven officials want to expand the town's landfill to help balance the budget, though tipping fees and other landfill income already bring in $45 million each year. The town council approved a plan Monday to increase the height of the landfill by 50 feet, bringing it to 320 feet. The Citizens Campaign for the Environment and other Brookhaven civic groups are suing the town since it didn't perform an environmental impact study. Since the town approved the plan, it now goes to the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) for approval. However, the DEC tells News 12 Long Island it has not yet received the town's application.Town of Brookhaven debates landfill's expansionBrookhaven mulls expanding unpopular Yaphank landfill
