The Department of Education is investigating whether a second Long Island school district can keep its Native American name and mascot.
This time it is the Connetquot Thunderbirds, or T-Birds.
The DOE says the Office of Civil Rights will be investigating, as it did with Massapequa’s chief mascot.
As News 12 has reported, the investigation was turned over to the Justice Department.
Connetquot requested an extension from the state to comply with the mandate. As of now, it has until March of next year to figure out what is next.
News 12 asked Connetquot schools and the state about the new investigation but has not heard back.
