STORM WATCH: Rain and wind impact your midweek plans

Showers and storms will bring rounds of rain to the area tonight into Thursday morning. Hurricane Erin will follow up with wind and wave activity as it passes by.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

A cold front is slowly approaching the area today, but it has been kicking up scattered showers and downpours along the way before its arrival. Most locations will see about 1/2 to 1 inch of rain in the end, with pockets of slightly higher amounts. There will also be breezy winds and reduced visibility at times, overnight into Thursday morning.

There is some tropical moisture coming in from Hurricane Erin as it makes its way northward. This will lead to a chance of some torrential downpours later this evening.

Breezy winds pick up through tonight, peak on Thursday and start to go down Friday. The winds will be higher towards the Long Island Sound, as well as in general for Eastern Hudson Valley, as opposed to areas to the north and west. Gusts could get up to 30 mph.

Friday will be a nice return to milder temperatures, after a brief break with a touch of autumn being felt. Temps get back into the 80s Friday and for the weekend, with humidity levels slowly rising. There will be a chance of

TROPICS: Hurricane Erin is on the move in the western Atlantic Ocean. It is a large and powerful storm that will bring rough surf, gusty winds and coastal breach erosion to the region. It is forecast to curve away from the Bahamas and make a northern turn through today. The forecast cone has it going between the East Coast of the U.S. and Bermuda through the rest of the week. While a direct impact via a landfall is not going to happen, the system will bring gusty winds and rough surf to our coastal areas.
