Though Hurricane Erin is not expected to make landfall on Long Island, the Town of Oyster Bay is taking precautions against other impacts from the storm.

Crews were at work on Tuesday cleaning out storm drains and building up Tobay Beach in preparation for expected rip currents and erosion related to the hurricane.

"We are going to create a berm in front of all the tunnels - the three tunnels that go under Ocean Parkway - to keep the surf out of those tunnels that could do damage," Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joe Saladino said. "We will do everything possible to stockpile sand so we have enough to fill in any spots that the waves could take away."

The supervisor added that lifeguards will decide on an hourly basis if swimming will be permitted at the beach.
