Southampton Town declared a state of emergency following storm damage in the area.  Officials say 2 to 3 inches of rain fell in the town Thursday night. They say rainfall runoff caused erosion that significantly impacted critical roadway infrastructure.
The New York State DOT is currently investigating and planning for emergency repairs at the Shinnecock Canal Bridge on Sunrise Highway in Hampton Bays. Westbound access in the area has been restricted to one lane of traffic until further notice.
Drivers are advised to anticipate delays and are encouraged to possibly stagger the timing of westbound movement or consider alternate routes/travel plans to reduce significant delays. News 12 reached out to the New York State Department of Transportation for additional information and is waiting to hear back.
