Staying safe and prepared at home is at the top of mind for many Long Island seniors, so PSEG Long Island is helping make that easier.

Through its Senior Connections program, the energy company hosts informational sessions across the island, focused on topics like home safety, energy efficiency and storm preparedness.

Ellen, one of the attendees at a recent session in Massapequa, says she's glad she opted to attend.

"I decided to come because you can never learn too much when it comes to safety in the home," she said.

She says one of her biggest takeaways was a reminder to ensure space heaters are three to four feet away from anything.

PSEG Long Island senior community partnerships coordinator Nicole Hall says the goal is to make these workshops accessible.

"It's a free community-based program, we started in January. We like to go to the local centers so that the seniors don't have to go far but we go to them instead," says Hall.

Attendees learned safety tips, such as checking electrical cords for damage, unplugging appliances when not in use and cleaning dryer vents to prevent lint buildup.

The session also covered what to do before, during and after a storm, including packing emergency kits.

The program also provides information on scam prevention and offers resources to help residents lower their electricity bills.
