The state education department has now released guidance following the ban of Native American mascots, team names and logos in public schools.
As News 12 has reported, the ban could affect nearly a dozen schools on Long Island.
The state originally said schools that did not comply could risk losing funding. News 12 is now learning that would be "last resort."
In addition, community members can petition to the education commissioner to try and remove a school officer who is not complying.
Schools have until June 30 of 2025 to make all necessary changes, but extensions could be granted if the school has made about 75% progress.
