While the check's not quite in the mail, New York state's School Tax Relief (STAR) tax rebate applications were sent to residents Monday.
The STAR local property tax rebate provides Long Island homeowners with a check ranging from $300 to more than $800, depending on local tax rates and household income. Last year, everybody in the same school district received the same rebate. This is the first year that income is a factor.
"We're not talking about a $25 or $50 savings, where you could say, 'Oh, forget about it,'" Assemblyman Phil Boyle (R-Bay Shore) said. "This is a significant savings."
Senior citizens with limited incomes are eligible for the enhanced STAR program. Rebate checks are automatically sent to those who qualify.
Others need to apply by November 30, either by mail or online. Those wishing to enroll in the program online still require the STAR code, which is an individualized number found on the paper application mailed Monday.
