School board officials responded Thursday to the New York State Comptroller's report that criticized Seaford Union Free School District for poor record keeping.
After believing a deficit was imminent, the district levied a tax the state now says was unnecessary. The state audit revealed the district had $2.5 million more than it had previously thought. The report states the district's poor record keeping yielded problems like the double paying of bills and paying bills without certifying purchase orders. School Board President Bradley Kass says 95 percent of the issues have already been addressed, and town confidence in the board has been restored.
The state comptroller's office is giving the school board 90 days to submit an official response, which will detail all planned corrective measures.
