Lack of action in the New York State Assembly has stalled and potentially terminated an $8 million bailout of the financially strapped Roosevelt Union Free School District.
The state Senate twice approved a grant for the district, which the state has controlled for the better part of the decade.
Critics of the inaction are pointing the finger at Assemblywoman Earlene Hooper (D-Hempstead), who did not respond to News 12 Long Island's several attempts for comment.
"Is she for it or against it? It doesn't matter," said Frank Scott of the Roosevelt Watch Society. "But she hasn't said anything to the community."
State Sen. Charles Fuschillo (R-Merrick), sponsor of the Senate bailout bill, said Hooper hasn't been in contact with him either.
Hooper's press spokesperson said the assemblywoman believes the $8 million is a loan. However, the bill states the money "shall be deemed a grant in aid."
Aides to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno said legislators will likely return before the end of the year. Some believe Hooper plans to introduce her own legislation on Roosevelt's dilemma.
