Long Island residents voiced mixed reactions Friday to Gov. Eliot Spitzer's (D-NY) proposal to legalize same-sex marriage.
Jeff Friedman, of Rockville Centre, met his significant other Andrew when they were classmates at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore. Twenty years later, they have an adopted son and enthusiastically welcomed Spitzer's gay marriage bill.
"I think it's long overdue," Friedman said. "I'm glad that we as New Yorkers will be the leaders in this, if it passes. And I hope other states will follow."
While some residents support the measure, others voiced strong opposition. They claim marriage is between a man and a woman.
Massachusetts is the only state that permits same-sex marriage, with four other states offering civil unions.
