The SPCA is investigating after a woman dropped off a badly injured, severely neglected dog Monday.
Doctors at an emergency animal hospital in Bohemia say a pit bull mix named Cappuccino had deep wounds and exposed tendons in both legs.
They suspect he had been tied to something outside for more than a month.
The dog also has skin and stomach infections, along with cuts and bites all over his body. When he first arrived at the hospital, doctors say he was dehydrated and extremely hungry.
The owner brought him to the hospital on Wednesday for a check-up, claiming she had just noticed his injuries. When doctors saw how badly the dog was hurt, they called Suffolk police.
Doctors recommended immediate medical attention, but the woman refused, saying that she could not afford it.
The hospital is now treating the dog for free.
Police say the dog may have been used as bait in a dog fighting ring. The Suffolk SPCA says they are still investigating the circumstances and that the dog's owner will likely face animal cruelty charges.
