At least six decapitated birds were found in Suffolk County within the last week, according to the Suffolk SPCA.
On Monday, three decapitated birds were found in Millers Pond Park in Smithtown.
Then on Tuesday, about three more decapitated birds were found by Wheeler Road in Great River.
Capt. Paul Liobell of the Suffolk County SPCA says the birds in these cases included chickens, a dove and what appeared to be a blue jay.
He says the recent incidents are tarnishing the neighborhood.
"It's a great area and to have this type of stuff happening here, it's unsettling and we'd really like to get to the bottom of it," Liobell says.
The Suffolk County SPCA says it's working with a renowned occult specialist, Marcos Quinones, who says the killings look like a Santeria ritual.
"They happen on a daily basis all over the United States and Caribbean," he says. "It's not a situation where people need to panic."
Goats, chickens, roosters and cow tongues have all been used in sacrifices previously throughout the county.
People in the area say they were "shocked" to hear that the discoveries were made in the area.
There is a $2,000 reward for information leading to the person responsible for the decapitations.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-832-7722.
