Southold residents are questioning the impact a proposed windmill farm will have on the environment and wildlife.
Hauppauge-based Winergy plans to build the nation?s first offshore windmill farm, consisting of three 445-foot research wind turbines, a few miles off Orient Point near Plum Island. However, members of the North Fork Audubon Society say they fear for the safety of the endangered Reoseate Terns that nest nearby.
Winergy officials say they are confident the turbines will not hurt the birds, adding that the blades rotate very slowly. If approved, Winergy says the windmill farm could be built by fall 2007.
