Southampton, Tuckahoe school districts re-examine school merger

A potential school merger that could save two East End districts millions is getting a second look.
Officials say the merger of Southampton and Tuckahoe school districts could save taxpayers in the new district $4 million a year. Southampton Superintendent Scott Farina says much of the savings would come from the elimination of about a half-dozen top administrators.
A new state law could ease an issue blamed for the proposal's defeat last year. Under a merger, taxes in Southampton would go up and taxes in Tuckahoe would go down. The new law would gradually phase in the increases over a 10-year period.
The Southampton School Board meets tomorrow night and is expected to set a date for a vote on the proposed merger. The Tuckahoe School Board is expected to do the same sometime later.
