A shooting in Shirley led to a police chase Thursday night, sources tell News 12.
Police say a man was shot in the leg outside a home on Parkwood Drive around 7:30 p.m. The victim was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.
Police will only say that they are investigating any connection between the shooting and a chase that happened shortly after.
Police did confirm that they attempted a traffic stop just before 7:50 p.m. at Mastic Beach Road and Mastic Road in Mastic Beach as part of the shooting investigation.
Police say the driver fled from the officer and was involved in a crash with another vehicle at the intersection of Moriches Middle Island Road and William Floyd Parkway in Shirley shortly after.
The driver faces multiple charges, including endangering the welfare of a child because there was a teen in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Neighbors say the shooting happened while they were just feet away playing in their yards with their kids. Several have said the house in question has had disturbances in the past, but not to this level.
An eyewitness and friends of the victim say that two men who'd never met exchanged words inside of a car after meeting, and that one of them pulled the gun on the other and shot him nine times in the leg.
Friends of the man who was shot say he was hit in both legs and is undergoing surgery for his injuries.
