An NYPD detective from Sayville is facing suspension after a rant against an Uber cab driver went viral.
In the video, you can hear what NYPD sources tell News 12 is Patrick Cherry, 38, cursing and berating a driver.
The man who posted the video claims the plainclothes officer was attempting to park without a blinker Monday. The Uber driver pulled around him and gestured that he should use his blinker.
The NYPD says the matter has been referred to the Civilian Complaint Review Board. The passenger in the Uber vehicle, Sanjay Seth, told News 12 that he has testified about the incident before the CCRB.
A source says this is not the first time complaints have been made against Detective Cherry, adding that he has 34 charges against him in a total of 13 cases before the board.
Cherry is on the department's Joint Terrorism Task Force. Neighbors say they don't know him to have a temper.
The head of the city's detective union said in a statement that Cherry should not be judged by this one incident, adding, "Despite what some people think, cops have feelings too."
In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, NYPD Police Commissioner Bill Bratton called the officer's actions "unacceptable." He announced that Cherry's gun and shield have been taken away pending the outcome of the investigation.
He has been transferred and placed on modified duty.
