Soundview sewage system gets an upgrade

The agency reconstructed the regulating chambers that were close to 100 years old. Over a third of all the sewage in the Bronx goes through the regulators at the site, so when DDC found that the structures were weak, it opened up an emergency contract to fix them.

The city’s Department of Design and Construction hosted a ribbon-cutting in Soundview to celebrate sewer upgrades in the area.
The agency reconstructed the regulating chambers that were close to 100 years old. Over a third of all the sewage in the Bronx goes through the regulators at the site, so when DDC found that the structures were weak, it opened up an emergency contract to fix them.
“I think it was impressive. We were working 24/7. I remember visiting the guys overnight. Everybody was tired, but we made it through under schedule, under budget,” said Ketty Paulino, deputy director of the DDC.
The project lasted close to three years and cost about $50 million dollars. Staff members on site say they’re grateful they were able to execute such a complex operation through support and determination.
The team also made some upgrades above the ground like reconstructing sidewalks, installing catch basins, pedestrian ramps, roadways, and they planted shrubs to make the area easier for pedestrians to navigate.
