A Suffolk County jury has convicted Christopher Fernandez of murder and multiple related charges for the 2022 fatal shooting of a Bohemia homeowner during an attempted burglary.
District Attorney Tierney said the verdict brings “some measure of justice” for the victim’s family, calling the case “a devastating reminder of how fragile life is.”
Prosecutors said Fernandez and accomplice Oliver Schor arrived armed at Michael Hartmann’s home around 6:36 a.m. on Nov. 2, 2022, believing a stolen cellphone was nearby. When they tried to enter through the back door, they encountered Hartmann. One of the men opened fire, killing him before both fled. Investigators later determined they had targeted the wrong house.
Fernandez also threatened a gas station employee in Manorville shortly before the shooting.
On March 6, 2026, Fernandez was found guilty of murder, attempted burglary, weapons possession, criminal use of a firearm, and petit larceny. He faces up to 25 years to life at his April 8 sentencing.
Schor’s case is still pending.
