A 69-year-old Mastic man was fatally stabbed inside his apartment early Monday morning, and police have charged his son with second-degree murder.
Suffolk County police said Edward Brown called 911 around 12:30 a.m. to report that he had been stabbed. First responders attempted to save Brown, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested Brown’s 33-year-old son, Sage Arias-Brown, who lives in Lake Ronkonkoma. He is being held in police custody and is expected to face a judge Tuesday.
The killing shocked residents along Mastic Boulevard, who described the neighborhood as quiet and peaceful.
“That’s very scary because we’re living here for 25 years and nothing happened,” said Pedro Toro, a Mastic resident. “It’s really quiet.”
Mike Colarusso, who said he has lived in the area for more than 30 years, also said the incident was unusual for the neighborhood.
“I’ve been here for over 30 years and never had a problem,” Colarusso said. “It’s a relatively quiet neighborhood without any problems. This is the first thing that’s been major.”
Crime scene investigators were seen working along Mastic Boulevard Monday as police continued their investigation.
No one answered the door at the Lake Ronkonkoma home associated with Arias-Brown.
Arias-Brown remains in police custody pending his court appearance Tuesday.
