Some critics of a state-run beach scheduled to open later this summer on the North Fork want to know why it won't have lifeguards.
Officials say swimming will be allowed without lifeguards present at Hallock State Park in Jamesport when it opens.
"Long Island Sound is generally safe," says Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter. "But there are spots where you go out 10 feet it's fine, but you go out 15 feet, and there's a sudden drop. And if you can't swim, you're going to have a problem."
Some say they are concerned because Long Island waters can get rough, cellphone service is spotty and it may be difficult for emergency vehicles to respond quickly with large bluffs cutting off the beach from nearby roads.
Riverhead Town officials are offering to provide lifeguards if state officials will reimburse the cost.
