A newly constructed storage building at Bayport-Blue Point High School is causing quite a bit of controversy. The facility was estimated to cost $100,000, but ended up costing four times that amount. Some residents say their tax dollars were squandered and say the money should have been used to improve academics. Superintendent Anthony Annunziato says the facility was originally proposed as a wooden building. However, the state Department of Education changed its building codes and required a fire-rated facility made of cinder blocks and steel. The storage facility will house most of the equipment for the track and football teams, which some students say will be a big help. The cost of the facility came out of the district's $35.5 million construction bond. Residents who want to learn more about the project can attend the school board meeting on Tuesday, September 12th.
