Nassau County's Department of Social Services (DSS) may have illegally stuffed tenants into Village of Hempstead homes.
A Village of Hempstead ordinance makes it illegal to rent to three or more individuals in one home. However, DSS, which finds homes for some people and pays the landlord $425 a month, has apparently placed more than 10 tenants in a handful of residences. Earlier this week, News 12 Long Island reported about a house with as many as 28 residents.
"You know what, it seems like the right hand don't know what the left hand is doing," landlord Clariona Griffith says. Griffith claims a DSS official approved her home after an inspection Monday. Nonetheless, 10 people reside in her single-family home.
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi said he's dealing with the problem of DSS apparently ignoring town or village restrictions.
"Historically [DSS employees] haven't been responsible for looking at what the rules are, but they're going to be from now on."
